This is The Brewery Art Colony in Los Angeles, California , and thebrewery.net website with links to the brewery artwalk, the artwalk, artwalk information and graphic design links and general fun stuff.

The Brewery Art colony consists of 500 or so resident or day use artists in every field of creation and production, including but not limited to: Graphic Design, Web Design, Art Direction, Flim/TV Directors, Production Design, Painters, Sculptors, Photographers, Weaving, Furniture Design, Taxidermy, Special f/x, Compositing, Motion Graphics, Multimedia Authoring, Architecture, Lighting Design, Interior Design, Set Dressing, Propmaking, Cinematography, Water Features.

"Free to the public and easily accessible, the Brewery ArtWalk is an ideal way for art aficionados to easily see in just a day or two, more varied, just-hatched creativity than would be possible in many days of gallery and museum hopping.

Acknowledged as the world’s largest live-work art colony, the Brewery attracts nearly 15,000 art-loving Southern California residents, tourists, collectors, curators, dealers, educators, and students to its famed ArtWalk. Over 170 private studios in the 300-studio complex throw open their doors to the public, giving them a rarely-seen glimpse of the artists’ diverse creations and loft-dwelling lifestyle.

In addition to painters, sculptors, performance artists and other fine artists, The Brewery has resident many specialty artists: designers of furniture, art glass, costumes and clothing, theatrical and movie sets, web sites and computer games, vehicles, greeting cards, and even high-fashion eye glasses. There are over 50 professional photographers. Other specialties include architecture, cinematography, musicians, composers, and many others.

A dozen of Los Angeles’ most important museums participated in the Spring ArtWalk and even greater museum participation is expected at the Fall Artwalk event. Visitors can learn about museum membership and get information on current and upcoming museum exhibitions.

The Brewery, a 22-building complex on 23 acres, comprises a variety of structures, some dating back to 1888. It includes a combination of the former Eastside and Pabst Blue Ribbon Breweries, from which the community derives its name, and one of Los Angeles' first power plants, Edison Power Station #3. It is located in an area rich with historic and cultural significance, near Olvera Street, Chinatown, and Little Tokyo, in the heart of downtown Los Angeles." -Don Levy

"There have been strong recent trends in the downtown area toward the replacement of artists' live and work areas through "gentrification," the process of turning artist's spaces into high-priced dwellings for non-artists, and by demolishing existing lofts to build non-loft structures, or simply turning them to other, higher rent uses. Rents in those areas have begun to skyrocket, while the number of artists there has significantly dwindled.

We who live and work at The Brewery have been unusually blessed. We have an environment which is clean, private, spacious, safe, and secure. Compared to what our artist colleagues have in many other areas of downtown LA, this is as good as it probably gets.

We're also fortunate that it's under the control of a single family that has regard for artists, and who have been supportive with donation of gallery space to the nonprofit Brewery Art Association, a pleasant park area in which to walk our dogs, a guard when it's dark to patrol on bicycle, just to name a few of the amenities.

Reasonably long-term leases with increases tied to the cost of living protect our ability to remain here without fear of outrageous, sudden and arbitrary escalation of rental rates. It's not surprising the waiting list to rent here is long.

It is worth reflecting that the good will, support and kindness of this one family is the only thing that stands between us and the major problems many other artists face just a few blocks away: unsafe streets, high crime, homeless encampments, parking problems, major pollution, prostitution and drug dealing, rocketing rents, absentee landlords and disinterested, incompetent management, just to name a few. It's entirely conceivable that necessity or opportunity too good to pass up could generate an overnight sale of the entire Brewery, whereupon we might all awake to the end of this fortunate oasis-like existence." excerpt from -http://www.mousethatroared.com/
